BARNSLEY FC women are preparing for a quarter-final at the weekend as they look to compete for cup glory as well as promotion in the final weeks of the season.
They host Bradford City in the League Cup quarter-final on Sunday from 2pm on the astroturf pitch at Oakwell.
A strong cup run could provide extra drama at the end of the first full season under the Barnsley FC umbrella for the women’s team.
Manager Jess Horsley said: “It would be fantastic to have a cup run into the final stages.
“It’s a really hard game, probably the hardest we could have had in the quarter-final.
“Bradford are really improved over the last couple of months. They have a new manager, brought in some new players and had good results.
“We haven’t played much for a few weeks so we need to be switched on from the start.
“Bradford have played a lot more so will have some momentum.
“We have had positive results against them twice so they will want revenge.”
The Reds’ league game at Alnwick Town was called off on Sunday, leaving them second in the North East Premier, three points off top, with five games to play.
Horsley said: “There were 50mph winds predicted so we called it on Saturday.
“Most games were called off this weekend.
“It was disappointing but we trained.
“The end of the season is going to be really busy.
“A lot of teams who have games in hand on us are going to have a very busy schedules.
“It’s hard at our level with amateur players.
“We’ve got five games left and we’re likely to have at least one midweek game to play.”
