EIGHT-year-old twins Edward and Stephen Lawrence have been following in their father’s footsteps as they find success on the ice.
The brothers, from Worsbrough, have been playing ice hockey for just two-and-a-half years but have already started making a name for themselves.
Luckily for the sport-loving pair, they have the perfect father to help them progress their skills - former GB and Sheffield Steelers player Davey Lawrence.
He told the Chronicle: “They play for the Leeds Junior Knights at Elland Road.
“They’ve played for various leagues and tournaments through that and have been doing really well.”
Stephen plays in goal just like his dad did, while Edward is an attacker.
Davey had already retired by the time his sons began showing interest in the sport, but through them he’s been dragged back into the rink as a coach.
“Now they’ve been invited to the Mighty Mites - it’s an introduction to elite playing and puts them on the path for England, and then eventually Great Britain,” he added.
“Young ones get a taste of what it’s like as a professional and are treated like athletes.
“Through it they get to learn what it takes to be a professional athlete, and the things they’re going to have to do to reach that level.
“They’re good boys and are doing really well.”
Despite all their hard work on the ice, the two boys haven’t let it get in the way of their education.
Executive headteacher at Worsbrough Common Primary School, Rebecca Paddock, said: “I have been to watch them both compete and they are amazing, it was great to see two very quiet pupils show grit and determination on the ice.
“I think it is commendable for two young boys to have the energy they do on the ice after full days at school and again to return to school on a Monday ready for learning after competitions over the weekend.”
